Patu
The Patu or Mere is one of the first fighting clubs used by Maori warriors and was often also carved in stone or jade.
In a fight it is used a little like a knife in with a stabbing or thrusting action so only the final blow was club like.
This stabbing motion meant that the strong bound wrist tether was extremely important to stop the fighters hand from sliding up the Patu with each thrust.
This is a full sized Patu.

Wahaika
The Wahaika is one of the many forms of fighting club used by Maori warriors and was reserved for only the highest ranking and most respected fighters. It is often given as a ceremonial piece on special occasions.
The carved figure on the edge represents either a sacred ancestor or the god of war. The Wahaika was held so that the figure faced the warrior so it could see over his shoulder to protect his back. The notch in the front edge of the blade was used to trap an enemy fighters weapon so that it could be twisted away from the body leaving the opponent open to a fatal blow.
This is a full sized Wahaika.

Carved Taiaha - Small
The Taiaha was one of the most formidable weapons of the tribal Maori and was used in close hand to hand combat. The British colonial troops found out just how effective it was when facing the Maori warriors who were expert guerilla fighters.
The Taiaha is not a spear, it is in fact used more like a medieval fighting staff using a technique very similar to that seen in martial arts with a pointed blade at one end a flattened edge at the other.
A full sized Taiaha is around 1.5 meters (5 feet) in length.
This is a small display piece modeled on a full size Taiaha and is complete with traditional binding and feather collar.
